2015 NFL Draft

Globe reporters Shalise Manza Young, Ben Volin, and Christopher L. Gasper bring news and commentary throughout this year's draft.

    CHICAGO — Touchdown, Bears!

It certainly felt like that at the auditorium when Goodell announced Chicago’s pick: West Virginia receiver Kevin White.

Fans erupted — the complete opposite reaction of Jets fans, who routinely serenaded their pick with boos for all those years the draft was held in Manhattan.

A few minutes after being announced, White came out to the stage. More cheers. And then — what else? — a big Bear hug with Goodell.

Washington DT Danny Shelton to the #Browns. All 12 picks have come from BCS conferences. Big Boys go first

CHICAGO  — OK, now this is getting interesting.

The St. Louis Rams used the 10th pick to take a running back: Todd Gurley out of Georgia.

This has become the least-popular position in a growingly pass-happy league — no running back was picked in the first round of the last two drafts — and the Rams selection is even more intriguing because Gurley is five months removed from a major knee injury.

But doctors say he’s on track and his combination of size (6-1, 222 pounds) and speed has some folks thinking he could be the next Marshawn Lynch.

    Danny Shelton to the Browns

BEREA, Ohio — With the top two quarterbacks long gone, the Cleveland Browns selected Washington defensive tackle Danny Shelton with the No. 12 overall pick in the NFL draft on Thursday night.

The 6-foot-2, 339-pound Shelton should help a defense that ranked last in the NFL against the run in 2014.

Much of the pre-draft speculation centered on the Browns, who also have the No. 19 overall pick, possibly moving up and to take the franchise quarterback they've coveted since their expansion rebirth.

Cleveland has started 22 quarterbacks since 1999, and the club’s inability to find an elite one has kept the Browns irrelevant.

They had two picks to dangle in front of Tennessee, but once the Titans took Oregon’s Marcus Mariota at No. 2, the Browns addressed one of their other big needs — a run stuffer.

MIAMI — The pick of receiver DeVante Parker Thursday is the latest move in the Dolphins’ revamping of their cast of targets for Ryan Tannehill. They lost veteran receivers Mike Wallace, Brian Hartline and Brandon Gibson this offseason, and have acquired veteran Greg Jennings and young Kenny Stills.

Parker missed the first seven games of his senior season with a foot injury, and then caught 43 passes for 855 yards and five touchdowns in the final six games. He tied the Louisville record for career touchdown receptions with 33, and had 10 100-yard games. Parker dropped just three passes in his final three seasons of college.

Chargers move up to get Gordon

SAN DIEGO  — The San Diego Chargers have not only kept quarterback Philip Rivers, but they've paid a heavy price to move up two spots to select Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon with the 15th pick overall.

The Chargers sent their first- and fourth-round picks this year and fifth-round pick next year to the San Francisco 49ers.

San Diego needed a bruising back to help take the pressure off Rivers, and they got it in Gordon. He set the FBS record for career rushing average with 7.79 yards per carry.

The Chargers needed a featured back after letting Ryan Mathews leave as a free agent.

A rumored trade of Rivers to Tennessee, which would have allowed the Chargers to take Marcus Mariota with the second pick, didn’t materialize.

Eagles, Kelly stay put and take a receiver

Chip Kelly stayed put after months of speculation that he would trade up to get his former Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota. But the price to move 18 spots to land the Heisman Trophy winner was too steep for Kelly. Mariota went to Tennessee at No. 2.

Instead, the Eagles get WR Nelson Agholor. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound wideout helps replace Pro Bowl receiver Jeremy Maclin, who departed in free agency.

It’s been a whirlwind offseason for the Eagles after they went 10-6 for the second straight year. Kelly traded Nick Foles and LeSean McCoy and released several veterans. He signed free-agent running backs DeMarco Murray and Ryan Mathews and acquired Sam Bradford and Kiko Alonso.
