Coming prepared to cheer
Carissa Worm of Smithfield, Virginia, is cheering on her husband, Toby, at this year’s Marathon. Remembering last year’s weather, she came prepared and is wrapped in a beige rain suit. She sits alone on a bench on Heartbreak Hill.A half-marathoner herself, she walked me through what a marathoner eats right before a race.This morning, at 5:30 a.m., her husband had oatmeal with flax and chia seeds, as well as a banana.He brought eight packets of energy gel, some beef jerky, and four bottles of electrolyte replenishing liquid with him to the start line.On the bench next to her is another two packets of energy gel in the flavors Key Lime and Fudge Brownie, as well as two more repurposed children’s squeeze bottles filled with the light yellow electrolyte replenisher. She will hand Toby the nourishment as he runs by her.Over the course of the race, her husband will consume an energy gel packet every three to four miles. She said they actually taste pretty good.Well, what shouldn’t you eat before running 26.2 miles?“Anything that’s not easily digestible,” Worm said. “You don’t want to go eat a heavy meal.”

Keep coming back, again and again
Susan Berry Cann, 61, of Danvers, is a nurse practitioner at St. Elizabeth's. This is her sixth year volunteering at the Boston Marathon.What makes her come back every year? "Once you do it, you realize how awesome it is," she said. She loves seeing the athletes cross the finish line, and being there to celebrate their accomplishment."You very feel very special to be with strangers at a really amazing point in their life," she said.She wore bright pink rubber boots so her feet will stay dry if it starts raining again."Last year was pretty nasty," she said.She's prepared to see a range of medical problems today."We're going to see a lot of different things," she said.She expects to see some athletes with hypothermia early on, and then some with hyperthermia later in the day as the temperatures get warmer."We anticipate a little of everything today," she said.
