68th annual Tony Awards recap

Globe correspondent Joel Brown provided updates and commentary about this year's Tony Awards on June 8. Read a recap of the show below.

  • Good evening. Is this thing on? In about 20 minutes, I'll be posting live updates on the Tony Awards here. And there is a lot to talk about, with the American Repertory Theater being all over that show. So get comfy, power up your second screen and I'll talk to you in a few.
  • If you haven't read Don Aucoin's look at the nominations and what it all means, check it out here.
  • Hugh Jackman or one of his minions just Instagrammed a pre-show video

  • If you're really doing your homework, here's somebody stirring up a kerfluffle over Jennifer Hudson singing a song from the ART's upcoming Finding Neverland, which she isn't in.
  • And here we go...
  • Jackman can out jump-rope Rocky.
  • Would have been funnier if NPH had pulled a Solange on him in the elevator
  • So far, NPH was funnier without talking than anything they wrote for Jackman.
  • Mark Rylance takes first award - featured actor in a play - for Twelfth Night - and uses his time to give a nice tribute to Sam Wanamaker
  • That's 0-1 for the ART, BTW, as Brian J. Smith was nominated for Glass Menagerie
  • On its twitter, the ART reports this: SEATED BEHIND AUDRA: ANNA WINTOUR WEARING SUNGLASSES
  • If you're playing awards show bingo, Hugh Jackman just took a selfie - with the Aladdin cast, as they were going to commercial. You can also check off "plug for gay marriage," "twitter joke" and "Clint Eastwood cameo".
  • Lena Hall takes featured actress in a musical for Hedwig. Harbinger?
  • I didn't think we'd get to 830 without a joke about pronouncing Idina Menzel
  • Clint did an empty-chair gag! What do you think is the size of the crossover audience for the Republican Convention and the Tonys?
  • How are we liking Jackman so far?
  • Idina Menzel really airing out a number from If/Then. Feel bad for her having to follow Aladdin in a cardigan, though.
  • See the comment link up there? Tell me what you think.
  • Clint got in his Jersey Boys plug. Now reading nominees for best direction of a musical. And the Tony goes to.... Darko Tresnjak for A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder. Who gives shout outs to Hartford Stage and his hubby. But his mom sounds awesome!
  • Best direction of a play ... goes to Kenny Leon for A Raisin in the Sun. That's 0-2 for Glass Menagerie.
  • That great Broadway classic... Eye of the Tiger
  • Fake boxing has got to be tough. Fake boxing in a ring that's being spun around? Fuggedaboutit
  • Anyone else see Samuel Jackson now and just think UNLIMITED CASH BACK?
  • I love that he gave a shout out to Hartford Stage--as he called it his artistic home. It has been a great theater company for decades.
  • Featured performer in a musical goes to James Monroe Iglehart of Aladdin, and everybody seems pretty happy about it.
  • Right from Aladdin's Genie to Cabaret. Parents start your explanations ... now #TonyAwards
  • Best featured actress in a play goes to Sophie Okonedo for A Raisin in the Sun. Glass Menagerie 0-3.
  • Jefferson Mays! Been waiting for this. #TonyAwards
  • Seriously, he could have just kept changing all night. And I would have watched that. #TonyAwards
  • And here's a big one, best actress in a play....
  • Audra McDonald takes home Tony #6 for Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill. Big tears. And it is not Glass Menagerie's night.
  • "You deserve much more than you were given when you were on this planet. This is for you Billie," Audra, nicely done.
  • Best actor in a play....goes to... Bryan Cranston for All the Way!
  • Relieved he remembered to thank his wife
  • But did he mention the ART?
  • RuPaul to intro Hedwig #TonyAwards
  • NPH killing. Bouncing on Sting's lap, then melting all over Kevin Bacon. But licking Samuel Jackson's specs?
  • That kinda looks like a Tony-winning performance, right?
  • I think that was Mark Rylance who got the NPH lap dance #tonyawards
  • @you SO far, so good. Doesn't feel as much like a job interview than prior years. "Look! He can sing and dance too!!"
  • Alan Cumming's suit was by BP #tonyawards
  • The playwrights get to talk. Not much diversity in this group.
  • And best play goes to... ALL THE WAY ...2 for 2!
  • There's Diane Paulus and director Bill Rauch
  • First Idina Menzel, now Sutton Foster. The cardigan is really this year's IT costume. #tonyawards
