Cavaliers take Game 1 vs. Celtics
By Adam Himmelsbach
On Tuesday the Celtics made it clear they hoped that the Cavaliers would be a bit rusty in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals after being idle since May 7. And although Boston’s players might be tired, the belief was that maybe they would just ride the momentum from their stirring Game 7 win over the Wizards in the conference semifinals two nights earlier.
But it quickly became clear on Wednesday that neither of these things would transpire. The Cavaliers were crisp, sharp, and connected, and the Celtics looked like they were stuck in mud at the start.
When they had open 3-pointers, they missed them. When they did not have open 3-pointers, they turned the ball over. And when they matched up against James, they could not stop him. Although the offense found some semblance of a rhythm late in the third quarter, by then the deficit was far too large against a team as powerful as this one, as the Cavaliers took a 117-104 win.
Just like that, the homecourt advantage Boston worked so hard to secure while the Cavaliers placed more of a premium on rest is gone.
Game 2 is Friday.
